Future Weapons – A Review

fw_071024094215901_wideweb__300x3991

For this post I thought of giving a review of one of the coolest shows in Discovery Channel, Future Weapons with Mach.

This was one of the shows that I started watching recently. The very first show caught my attention and I was all ears ( n eyes ). May be it was my curiocity for latest technology but I found it really interesting. One major factor that adds to the shows credit is the host Mach Machowicz.

Mach was a former US Navy SEAL with a 10 year experience. The Discovery Channel Website tells me that during his service tenure, he participated in numerous tactical operations with SEAL Team ONE and TWO. While at SEAL Team TWO he was attached to the training cadre as the Leading Petty Officer of Land, Mountain and Arctic Warfare.

His real interest and curiosity for the developing military technology and his disappointment that the technology was not available during his time all adds to the shows greatness.

And now something about the show.

The show features the products of latest military technology from around the world and the future prospects. It was really heartening to know about what latest technology can give us. Some of the weapons shown are unbelievably powerful and reliable. I have mentioned about a UAV in one of my posts Fighting Battles with Joysticks. There were episodes which featured all terrain tanks, future aircrafts, all purpose tow vehicles, lots and lots of highly powerful guns, latest barbwire cutters and lots more.

I found this show really informative and interesting and recommend this to your list of much watch shows on TV.

Popularizing 3DTV

The sales figures of Three-Dimensional (3D) TV fall short of the industry's expectations, although the latest technology has given rise to truely autostereoscopic images, without glasses or coloured spectacles. And that is because the video chain — the process of producing and distributing images — is not geared to support 3D display. Dr Peter Tsang has recently developed a unique technology that allows the entire video chain to produce, store, broadcast, retrieve and playback 3D images without having to change its existing infrastructure. Currently, a viewer must connect his TV to a computer installed with 3D modelling software before autostereoscopic images can be generated and viewed. With Dr Tsang's 3DTV enabling technology, both 3D and ordinary 2D monitors can display autostereoscopic images, and no accessory or wiring is required of the monitors, making 3D display a convenient and affordable option to all.

Azuki Systems unveils its latest technology

(Peter Howe, NECN) - Jim Ricotta and Cheng Wu aren’t household names, but among New England technology entrepreneurs, they are rock stars. Between them, they helped found five telecom and networking startups that later got acquired for more than $7 billion dollars by giants like Cisco, IBM and Lucent. Their new big idea involves the cellphone.

After months in secret startup in Acton, Massachusetts, their new company, Azuki Systems, gets formally launched next week. Its big innovation: a software platform called Media Mashup. It turns web content into phone-sized pieces and formats.

Then, catching the social networking craze, Azuki lets you share web-phone content with your Facebook or MySpace friends like you'd share something by computer.

Azuki also enables advertisers to put in ads relevant to stuff you've shown you like to buy.

Three billion people own cellphones, and 75 percent, it's estimated, can download web content. Cellphone companies' expensive new TV-on-phone services haven't been a raging success yet. But mobile entertainment is still a healthy $20 billion dollar market now, potentially tripling to $64 billion by 2012.

One reason Azuki's sure to create some buzz: the track record of Chairman Wu and CEO Ricotta. To quote the mutual fund warning, past results are no guarantees of future success.

But with lucrative startups behind them like Datapower and Sightpath, Arris, Acopia, and Arrowpoint, which fetched $5.7 billion

Hyundai to display "blue" technology at Melbourne International Motor Show

Hyundai Motor Company will display two examples of its latest technology at the Melbourne International Motor Show. The i10 blue and i30 blue adopt the company's new 'blue' sub-brand which will be utilised on a global basis for low emission vehicles.

The i30 produced in Hyundai's new Nosovice factory in the Czech Republic, will be the first mass production vehicle to wear the blue label as i30 blue. Demonstrating the company's commitment to lowering vehicle CO2 emissions and reducing costs for consumers, Hyundai brings ISG (Idle Stop and Go) technology to a production car for the first time. Ideal for city driving, the i30 blue will automatically switch the car's engine off when stationary.

The ISG system uses an advanced starter motor connected to the ECU, which monitors the car's status at all times. Remarkably, this technology applied to Hyundai's 1.6 litre petrol engine reduces fuel consumption by 7% on the official European combined cycle, while achieving a lower CO2 rating of 142 g/km, compared to the 152 g/km achieved with the standard i30 1.6 petrol engine.

The i10 blue and i30 blue will join the all-new i20 small car and sporty Genesis Coupe on Hyundai's stand at Melbourne.

Mitsubishi HC5000BL projector

Mitsubishi Digital Electronics Presentation Products Division, known for award-winning, high-quality presentation and display products, today introduced its 1080p home theater projector, the HC5000BL. Based on the latest LCD technology and High Quality Video (HQV) high-performance video processor from Silicon Optix, Mitsubishi's HC5000BL offers true 1080p (1920 x 1080) resolution for the highest definition of detail and action, and performs seamlessly with the latest Blu-ray or HD DVD technology. "Our new HC5000BL brings the best of the best to our customers," said Frank Anzures, product manager, Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America's Presentation Products Division.

Mitsubishi HC5000BL

Mitsubishi projector HC5000BL
"We have the latest technology, the latest features, and the highest quality performance available today." The HC5000BL is designed with new inorganic LCD panels that are more durable and provide a more color-consistent, even-toned image than previous generation LCD panels. The LCD optical engine is enclosed to prevent dust from entering the engine, which decreases the number of particles landing on the LCD panels, and keeps the image cleaner. Mitsubishi's HC5000BL delivers HQV through Silicon Optix's Reon-VX chip, which provides true HQV four-field, motion-adaptive, per-pixel, high-definition (HD) deinterlacing that delivers the sharpest and most detailed HD images possible. The HQV multi-direction diagonal filter removes any "jaggies" and/or stair-step artifacts from deinterlaced video sources without blurring the image, while sophisticated noise reduction technology removes the noise and artifacts caused by compression.

Mitsubishi projector HC5000BL - Details
Using Mitsubishi's exclusive algorithms to control its dynamic iris, the HC5000BL also boasts one of the highest contrast ratios available today, achieving an unprecedented 10,000:1 for the most exacting features in dark areas of an image. These new algorithms detect and maximize color information as well as luminance, creating realistic detail in film noir and action flicks. With up to 5000 hours of lamp-life (in low mode), HC5000BL owners won't have to change them often, but when it's necessary, the new projector offers a design that makes replacement quick and easy. Through an easily accessed lamp housing, users simply switch the lamps without taking the mounting structure apart and physically handling the projector.

Tokyo, Japan. February 27, 2009 - eSOL, a leading developer of real time embedded software solutions, will showcase its latest real time operating system (RTOS) technology for multicore processors at the Multicore EXPO (March 16-19, Santa Clara, California, USA). In 2006, eSOL released its prominent eT-Kernel Multi-Core Edition(TM) RTOS, powered by Blended Scheduling(R) which uniquely blends asymmetric multiprocessing (AMP) into symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) in a single OS. Because of its reliability and proven performance, eSOL's complete multicore solution has been used by multiple leading embedded-device manufacturers and other customers since then. Further enhancing its Blended Scheduling technology, eSOL's latest eT-Kernel Multi-Core Edition Memory Partitioning provides the most advanced multicore system protection. It does this through its unique multicore partitioning technology, without employing a conventional solution based on hypervisor. eSOL will present a conference session and demonstrate its integrated software solutions platform for ODMs, OEMs, and SoC vendors.

eSOL's multicore technology is used in its distinctive eT-Kernel Multi-Core Edition RTOS, which is based on the SMP model, yet incorporates benefits of the AMP model to offer deterministic characteristics for real time embedded applications. Thus a single OS provides software developers with the scalability and high-throughput efficiency of SMP, along with the more deterministic and real time characteristics of AMP.

The eT-Kernel Multi-Core Edition's Memory Partitioning protects memory across different cores and partitions, while maintaining software reusability and system reliability, by using "Kernel Protection" and "Core Partitioning". These two technologies will detect any access violation of another partition's local memory, greatly helping the development and assuring the quality of deployed systems. Memory Partitioning also ensures the flexibility of system design where multiple subsystems need to work more closely together, and has overcome paravirtualization issues, including hypervisor drawbacks, to successfully design complex but integrated embedded devices.

Latest Technology & New Techniques in Surgery

Digital technology will make description of a surgeon of yesteryear – “Eyes of a Hawk and the Heart of a Lion” obsolete. Familiarity with a mouse will be the order of the day. “Point and Click”, “Single Click, Double Click”, “Left Button, Middle Button and Right Button”, “Drag and Drop” these will be the jargon of the surgeon in the operation theatre.

The last few years have witnessed a tremendous growth in interactive image guided brain surgery – a detailed road map at last. The added advantage is, that this map is updated in real time. The presence of landslides and road blocks ahead are broadcast as in a citizens band radio. Reversing one’s path will almost never take place. How is this done?

Today with real time interactive image guided surgical tool like “The Viewing Wand” it is possible to achieve a navigation as precise as that in the Voyager mission. After all the intricacies and the consequences are none the less initial MRI or CT scanning is done with markers placed on the patients scalp which serve as reference points.

Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center

Not just another show…. The RSSI C&S Exhibition held in Nashville was another successful show. In May, the railroad and railroad transit signal and communication community came together to view the latest technology, discuss the current trends and to solve the many issues that plague an industry that is over 200 years old. As we strive to use the most current technology to produce products and solutions to problems that have arose over the past decades, the RSSI exhibition format encourages the networking that brings the problem holders and the problem solvers together.

The economic environment forced all companies (railroad and supplier) to review the benefits of the RSSI Exhibition. The RSSI Exhibition was supported by 140 exhibiting member companies occupying 296 booth spaces, a true indication of the value placed on the RSSI exhibition by the members. As can be seen in the photo’s throughout the newsletter, traffic in the exhibits was heavy and consistent, a clear indicator of the attendee interest.

CDMA technology

The latest technology being used in mobile communication is Code Division Multiple Access(CDMA). The communication technology has improved vastly over the last decade. Starting from Time division multiple access(TDMA) and then moving on to frequency division multiple access(FDMA) and then now we have code division multiple access(CDMA). All these technologies have helped in bringing more users into the system. Now most of the Phones support CDMA technology although it is not yet used in all parts of the world. It is a method that is being utilized by many radio communication technologies. Slowly it is now being used in mobile communication too.In mobile technology it is referred to as CDMA2000 OR cdmaone. In mobile communication, CDMA is the basic technology that is being used to send voice, data signals. There are various CDMA2000 standards that are being used and the basic one being 1xRTT.

Sony Expo Showcases Latest Tech

The annual Sony Hawaii Expo was held this week at the Ala Moana Hotel Hibiscus Ballroom. Highlight of this year’s Sony Expo was the desktop Sony OLED flatscreen TV (shown above). The hallmark of this high tech wonder is its small size and crystal clear high definition picture. The screen itself is thinner than a compact disc jewel case.

Another hyped product at the Sony Hawaii Expo is the new Sony Rolly MP3 player. It is a new portable device that is shaped like a little barrel and moves to the beat of the music. The speakers on this device are positioned at both ends and open up with winglike flaps on each end. The device will not be marketed in the U.S. and is aimed only at consumers in Japan. If it were sold in the U.S. the price would be at around $400.

Face recognition “smile” technology for Sony Cybershot cameras were also a new this year. The new Cybershots can sense when a person smiles and fires only at that time. People were happily smiling for the demo at the Sony Cybershot booth. There were many other Cybershot digital still and video cameras that were also on display for consumers to play with.

Japan's first-ever space cargo ship arrived at the international space station Thursday to end a flawless maiden voyage to the orbiting lab.

The gleaming space freighter, dubbed the H-2 Transfer Vehicle 1 (HTV-1), approached the space station from below after a weeklong chase so astronaut Nicole Stott could pluck it from orbit using the outpost's robotic arm as both spacecraft flew 225 miles above western Romania.

Stott and her crewmates marveled at the new spacecraft as they watched it draw near through station windows. She described the 33-foot (10-meter) freighter looked like a "very shiny, gold" spaceship.

World Heritage sites about to go digital

Scotland - A team of British scientists is preparing to create a digital model of Mount Rushmore using laser scanning so that the iconic U.S. monument can be recreated were it to be damaged.

The survey work is part of a project to accurately record the exact dimensions of 500 of the most famous World Heritage sites, including the Acropolis in Athens and the Great Wall of China.

The joint team, from the Glasgow School of Art and Historic Scotland, are currently surveying 10 World Heritage sites in Britain before they aim their laser beams at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota.

Scientific honor roll includes old genetic rivals

The leaders of competing efforts to decode the human genome were cited Thursday for presidential honors, almost a decade after the "genome race" ended in a tie.

Among the recipients of the National Medal of Science listed by the White House are Francis Collins, who led the government-organized Human Genome Project in the 1990s; and Craig Venter, who established a for-profit corporation called Celera Genomics to pioneer a "shotgun" approach to whole-genome sequencing.

Celera made rapid progress on the genome quest, sparking an acceleration in the publicly funded effort. Both groups ended up publishing their results in February 2001 — with the draft from the public project appearing in the journal Nature, and the draft from Celera appearing in Science.

OLED phone screens mean brighter gaze ahead

Who wouldn't want a cell phone with a sharper, brighter display than the color LCDs in common use today — especially if it made the phone slimmer and doubled its battery life?

Such displays, using a technology known as Active Matrix-Organic Light-Emitting Diodes, in time could even unroll from a phone in the form of a thin, flexible sheet to display vivid images, games and videos on a screen the size of a cocktail napkin or larger.

Yet even basic AMOLED displays may not be common in handsets any time soon, say some industry analysts, because of limited manufacturing capacity. The 20-year-old technology still hasn't ramped up sufficiently, even for the relatively small displays required by handsets

5 things to hate about HDTV

It’s hard to say anything bad publicly about high-definition TV. Aficianados are rabid. Consumers are going ga-ga for high-def: 53 percent of households in the United States now own an HDTV, up from 23 percent in 2007, according to the Cable & Telecommunications Association for Marketing.

Prices on sets have dropped as precipitously as the economy, and 32-inch HDTVs can be had for as little as $399 at Costco. Life is good. Can’t buy a house? Buy an HDTV.

And yes, the picture is spectacular – when you can get it. HDTV is not always easy to set up or to view. Unless you’re a home theater maven with a master’s degree in HDTV, you may find yourself lost in a sea of acronyms and acrimonious feelings toward the set at which you’re staring. That’s one thing to hate about it. Read on for more.
